juice

i feel like all i can think about after this weekend is juice. it was a long one.

sophie woke up from her nap on friday, leaned over her bed and threw-up everywhere. luckily landen was already home early so we started off on a good foot. after that it was 14 throw ups in 4 hours, and about 20 total by the next morning at 6am. we had her birthday party planned with another little friend turning two so we were really hoping she'd be feeling better. (see some pics at the end of this post until i edit some of mine, thanks john!). we took her to the dr. right before we went to the party to make sure everything was ok. they told us to take her to the ER if she kept throwing up and couldn't keep liquids down. she seemed fine (well, fine as in didn't feel good, but not throwing up) during the party but still wasn't really interested in food or liquid. we got in the car to go home and immediately started the throwing up saga again. that night at 2am she was so hot and couldn't stop dry heaving we decided to take her in. after waiting 6 hours to see a dr. (never again will i go to the ER at south shore) he finally decided she needed an IV to pump some liquids through her. i've never seen her look so helpless during a dr. check-up. she just layed there staring into space, it was so sad. she was so dehydrated and her blood sugar was low so she got a shot of glucose as well. they told us putting an IV in a one-year-old was quite the production and they weren't lying. her vein burst in the first arm so they had to try another one that took in the other arm. after that they had to stick her foot to check her blood sugar again. (i was getting a dejavu from the jaundice days). poor girl was so tired of being stuck she was afraid of anyone that walked into the room.

at about 11:30 (already 8 1/2 hours in the ER) they needed to give our room to someone else so we got pushed into the hallway for 3 hours stuck to an IV. nightmare. i layed on the bed with sophie while she slept and landen pretty much stood next to us the whole time or rocked sophie. we bugged the nurses to death (another group of people i'm not very happy with after all this... no offense to my nursing friends, i just realize how much medical people stand around chatting and eating, grrr...) until we finally got admitted to pediatrics. we thought we had our own room until another little baby got moved in with us. just imagine a sick 8 month old (same thing soph had) in the same room with you for 24 hours. and a cryer he was.

sophie wasn't improving at all (besides eating a couple pretzels) and her fever was bouncing all over the place so we had to stay the night. they only let one parent stay so landen went home and i stayed with soph. she did pretty good overnight, (minus the crying baby waking up every hour or two) i think she was just so exhausted. but no more throwing up since 5am so that was a good sign! they also had to get a urine sample which is another disaster (imagine how you do that on a sick toddler) i won't get into. half of our night was spent trying to get that. the next morning she looked so sick and still didn't want food or drink, but decided to take her off the IV to see how she would do on her own. miracle. she could finally get up and walk around (she was so shaky it scared me a little). i think she just wanted out of that bed! so we found some window clings out in the hallway on a window that kept her entertained for hours. after that it was a s-l-o-w improvement to eating a few things and drinking a few sips here and there. she was still losing more than she was taking in though (thanks to the diarrhea that started) so we thought we'd have to stay another night. after a nice long battle of getting her to take a nap she finally ate like 6 french fries and drank almost a whole juice box. HUGE VICTORY! they finally let us go home at 8 last night and now we are just monitering her intake of liquid liquid liquid. see why i have juice on my mind?

but now she's eating and drinking (slowly) and acting like a normal kid again. i don't even care that she has that recuperating-grouchiness, i'm just so glad she's ok and that she has a personality again! i missed my soph and am so grateful to be her mama. yes it was a hard, long, mothers day weekend, but definitely one for the record books. and definitely one that made me work hard at being a mom! i also feel so blessed i have a husband who is so patient and supportive and was able to be with us the whole time. i don't know what i'd do without him! so 3 1/2 days later... besides being mentally & emotionally drained, everyone is surviving!

after soph got her IV out she lounged watching piglet for awhile...

wow, what a busy weekend. that would be hard trying to get a urine sample for a toddler! you're amazing...still smiling amidst all the chaos (at least, you look somewhat happy in that picture). i'm sorry you all had to go through that! holy cow.

that would be so so stressful waiting that long to just see the dr!!
hope you feel better, cute Sophie.

Poor Sophie! And poor parents! Though I've never had a visit to the ER take less than 5 hours even for fairly minor issues. So take heart. Now for the big question- what will your medical bill look like?!?

Glad to hear you're home and everyone's ok!

I am so sorry Kristen, I can sympathize with you, Aiden was on IV for 3 days when he was about Sophie and Abby's age. Glad she's starting to be herself again.

You're almost there with Girl #2!! It seemed like your pregnancy went so fast to me. I'm excited for you. And you were right, I feel like a cow right now and nothing else. All they want to do is eat!!!

aww, how sad! So maybe it was a nationwide bug, 'cause we had Micah in the ER for the same things a couple weeks ago. So glad she's better!
