detour

i'm interrupting my new england trip to jot down a few things about daily life. will return again soon.

there are so many perks to being a mother. "infant/child parking" at the grocery store. staying home all day in my pajamas if i just feel like it. feeling needed by little humans. learning patience... lots of patience. getting loves from those little humans. getting to name a little human (seriously, what's cooler than that!?).

but then there are a few days (more than a few sometimes) when your days feel a lot like this...

Photobucket
{photo by bethany jackman, edited by me... those pics coming someday}
(i'm piper, and she's sophie hanging on me all day while i try to scream and hide)

and i feel a little bit crazy. or a lotta bit.

a few things i've learned from motherhood thus far:

  • puke on your shirt is normal, but puke in your mouth is gross.
  • you gotta have the long, bad days to appreciate the happy, peaceful ones.
  • cornstarch is a modern miracle. it will soak up pee and make it look like it never happened.
  • backyardigans are your friends.
  • if all else fails, just strap them in their carseats.
  • forget bringing a change of clothes for the baby, bring one for yourself.
  • don't spend a lot of money on a diaper bag/purse until your kids are out of the "i need a snack" every 6 seconds stage. it will inevitably be covered in crumbs and a mysterious sticky substance no matter what precautions you take.
  • write down what they say and do, you'll forget it next week.
  • if all else fails, lock yourself in the bathroom.
  • child labor, 'nuff said.
  • stick to your guns and don't start cutting off their crusts, it's just a domino effect. (i'm so hard core, right!?)
  • praise every little thing they do.
  • super nanny time-outs. do it.
  • hugs and kisses night and day.
  • thank goodness for dads at 5:00.
  • hang their art on the fridge.
  • double bag it.
  • pray for them, pray with them, even if they don't want to.
  • play on the floor.
  • take them on dates.
  • if all else fails, stick them in the bathtub. that ought to kill 20 minutes.

obviously i could go on... and on. i always need a good reminder on surviving motherhood. and i'm so glad i'm not the only one going through it. we are finishing up the teething nightmare that accompanies the one-year-old stages, and the emotional roller-coaster of the extremely dramatic three-year-old in our house. and after all is said and done, i laugh with them (and at them) every day. i love watching them interact with each other. i love the funny things they say and do. i love that i get to teach them who they are, and why they matter. i love that i get to sing with them and hear them pray. i'm still so happy to be their mom.

i don't know if you've seen this, but i watch it pretty much every week.

Your list is awesome! But wow, that first bullet... that is so crazy! I don't even want to imagine. Claire has never (knock on wood) throw up on me. And she has only throw up once... in her crib. So wow, you are a mommy of steel to be able to survive it!

Bethany Jackman. I lived in her ward at the Riv one year. Super talented. Wish she (or you) lived in Vegas to take our family pics!

Good post and thanks for the perspective!

What a great list. I'm looking so forward to the happy times (and I wouldn't be able to recognize them without the hard times). Thanks for sharing the hard-won wisdom. :)

I totally agree with everything you have posted. One thing is for sure children defiently help us mothers to learn patiences LOTS of it.

thanks for a great pick me up post. i needed it today

Why, oh why do we have to live on opposite ends of the country?!? This post just reminded me why we were the best of friends...because we think soooo much alike, and when things were hard you made me laugh at it. Today I was literally banging my head against the wall while Caden and Parker pulled on my leg bawling and wiping their nasty cold season noses on my black pants. If you would have been with me at least I would have been laughing as I banged my head against the wall. Or maybe our kids would have been watching backyardigans together for the 4th hour while we crafted. :)

Love your list, I watch that video constantly too, and CUTE picture!!
xoxo.

Noah started his terrible twos and he spends half the day screaming. I need to be reminded about the good things. Thanks.

ah this list was spot on! totally needed to read it. although i have never (as yet) been puked on. hopefully it won't happen any time soon. but basically i have to say that your blog makes me long for the east coast. i think we need to move there now. i'm dying at all the scenery (which we are so CLEARLY lacking).

oh and i answered your chalkboard question on my blog in the comments ;)

Your list IS awesome and it just keeps growing and changing as your children grow and change. Then when they are all grown and off on their own you hope and pray that you've loved, taught and laughed with them enough! You NEVER stop being a mom...it's soooo worth it! Hugs!

So, not to be the loser of the comments, but you might want to check out the definition of "double bag(ging) it" on UrbanDictionary. I hope your blog isn't searchable or you could get some strange visitors to your site! :)

Now- Yes. I keep learning these things over and over. I've also learned that white clothes (mine) stay in the closet until at least your children's 2nd birthday!
